Can the government change history

Can the government change history?

There are many ways to read the question.
I will answer the two that came to mind immediately.
Short answer to both: yes.

Can the government change the school curriculum so that what the public has a different perception of history? Of course they can! Whether it is done to purposefully paint a particular culture in a better or worse light, or if it is done to “make history more accurate” (or both!), it happens all the time.

Can the government do something so drastic that it becomes a notable item of history? Sure! I’d go so far to say that ALL governments that are actually mentioned in history books are there because they did something like that.
I mean, would Macedonia’s existence be widely-known if it weren’t for the changes wrought by Alexander the Great?
